Note Values Reference

Note values:

𝅝 Whole note = 4 beats
𝅗𝅥 Half note = 2 beats
Quarter note = 1 beat
Eighth note = 1/2 beat
16th note = 1/4 beat
𝅘𝅥𝅯 32nd note = 1/8 beat

Beat types:

Accent = Louder beat
Normal = Regular volume
Silent = No sound

Common time signatures:

  • 4/4 (Common Time): 4 quarter notes per measure
  • 3/4 (Waltz Time): 3 quarter notes per measure
  • 2/4 (March Time): 2 quarter notes per measure
  • 2/2 (Cut Time): 2 half notes per measure (feels faster than 4/4)
  • 3/2: 3 half notes per measure (used in Renaissance and Baroque music)
  • 6/8: 6 eighth notes per measure (often grouped as 2 dotted quarter notes)
  • 9/8: 9 eighth notes per measure (often grouped as 3 dotted quarter notes)
  • 5/4: 5 quarter notes per measure (often used in jazz and contemporary music)
